I had always prided myself on nonconformity. I devoured anthropology books and had strong feelings about the straitjacket of gender roles, and I wanted to shake off those outdated behaviors and be kind to all my partners and treat them with respect. If anyone could have overcome this double standard, it should have been me. But as much as I knew I was not hurting her by living there, and as much as I realized that living with a stripper who paid for the cocaine was many a man’s dream, I still felt terribly self-conscious and conflicted about the whole affair. I could not overcome it no matter how hard I tried.

I think his bigger problem was not relying on the woman's income but squandering his time. From the sound of it, he didn't use the additional resources (time + money + better rest) to invest in his own value.

What a pathetic excuse for a man.

While others were toiling away at 9-to-5 jobs in midtown for 30K a year, I had managed to secure waiter/bartender gigs that were netting me $200 to $300 per night, cash. While my peers invested in 401Ks and equities, I got hot tips from investment bankers and French tourists. Working two or three nights was all I needed to survive and the rest of my time could go to making music, writing and hanging out all night.

He deludes himself into thinking he has it better than those "normals" out there. Typical hipster trash.

Focusing on building your resources and status is the surest way to ensuring a stress-free existence. Bonus side effect of turning women on.

When you stop taking care of yourself the world will just shrug at your misfortunes.

He was a server-boy both at work and at home.

I dunno, he was banging a hot chick that he didn't care about, on his own terms

on his own terms

Being completely financially dependent on a woman means it's never on your own terms. What power do you have to walk away when she can pull your financial stability out from underneath you?

You can bang hot chicks without castrating yourself this way.

He did fine without her... And notice he did get fed up AND leave on his OWN TERMS.

Interesting read, dunno what to make of it though

Her only regret was that she couldn't keep him. When a woman knows that she possesses you, she has nothing to lose and can and will exchange you for something else (doesn't even have to be better) or keep you as a pet.

I am a (recently married) kept man of a few years. Just having stumbled across TRP not too long ago, I am testing the waters. So far TRP has helped me gain a fair amount of self respect. I had the same problem this guy did at first, a dreadful gnawing feeling of inadequacy. I dealt with this by owning what I am and what I do. I take care of everything except for where the money comes from, everything. I am still in control of the relationship, I am still the head of the family, I am still strong. And the more I develop myself physically and mentally, the better things get. Anyways, just my experience. Make of it what you will.

You should try a TRP IamA. There are those who will say shit no matter what because you're not the provider, but I think others might have interest and questions to see if and how this works.

I respect your choice to live that life, but don't kid yourself. The one that brings the money home is the head of the familly. That ain't you.

This sounds awesome. Sounds like she liked having him around and was willing to spoil him. She gave him money but he didn't mention anything about her making him do shit.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah he seemed to have it pretty good and she clearly enjoyed his company through her actions. If he felt like a mooch it was because he was doing that, mooching. Not really enjoying her company as much and appreciating what she was doing for.him while getting himself going. If that was his intention from the begining he was just using her. Using someone would make me uncomfortable too.

Sounds like he felt guilty that he wasnt getting anywhere. Not the relationship imbalance. I know I would feel very wrong just being taken care of by a guy. I have a lot to do and I don feel it is fair. I will do everything in my power to be involved and productive in some way to either make his life easier or to improve myself. I would expect that if my partner fell into trouble he would do the same and I would damn sure support him. I agree with autonfa. This man just didn't know how to use his time.
