The kidnapping of 186 teenage boys in Syria on 30 May has gone largely unreported in the wider world, a curious omission given the outcry over the teenage girls in Nigeria.

"It's intimidating."

Yes, compared to men, women are timid creatures. The timid will likely fail at business due to their fears, not their funding.

Spot on. If i'm going to invest in VC, it's because i believe i'm going to get an high return. Like from 10x to 20x of what i invested.

To get that kind of returns you can't open a coffee shop or an hairdresser or whatever the fuck a woman is going to open.

You have to take HIGH risks to get that much money. You need a great start-up, with cutting edge technologies, brilliant ideas and balls of steel.

Do you see any woman with these factors? Me neither.

Women will almost always jump on the wagon when it's already going fast, like Marissa Mayer or Sheryl Sandberg. That's because their subconscious tells them that taking risks is too much for their body and even babies, so they will just wait untill they find a BB or a possibility to make that much money without the same risks.

That's what I got as well...

We talk in here about women being primarily emotional creatures... and that emotion is fear. I think that knowledge is useful to men's understanding of gender roles especially in the anger phase. I'll posit that all that BS we encounter with women... all the tantrums, shaming and shit testing... indeed the entire hamster is a product of fear-based thinking.

It might present itself as arrogance & solipsism, but it's almost always fear in the drivers seat. Gotta be why negs, social proof & outcome independence work so well in the SMP.

Financing is usually only a problem for successful companies that are growing so fast that they run out of cash... in order for the VC gap to be an actual problem, you'd need woman run SMBs to be growing a lot faster than male ones, which I have not heard any evidence suggesting that is the case.

Women are opening small businesses at a ratio of 3:1 compared to men? If true - wow.

[–]Anderfail6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's a complete misnomer. Most small businesses in the US are put in a woman's name to get the minority benefit. Essentially the wife will own the company while the husband runs it. This is so common that it's odd if you don't actually see it and it puts you at a significant disadvantage if you don't do it.

[–]1TVTestPattern[S] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No doubt... my own company is going through acquiring/integrating such a company... government contracts based on minority quotas.

Minority Quotas... kill me now.

[–]LewisSkolnick0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gotcha. Thanks for the info.

Included in these "small businesses" are franchises and networked marketing businesses like Pampered Chef, Avon, Mary Kay, and the like. Most of these are ephemeral, economically speaking, and rarely do they sustain a profit over time. They're low-risk, off-the-shelf "opportunities" that capitalize on the strength of feminine business acumen: networking. The larger your social circle, the larger your success.

But as far as designing, building, and producing crap for sale? The kind of stuff that actually requires real VC? That's a sausage fest. There's a reason for that, too.

Have an upvote... when fear drives your agenda that's it.

No risk = no reward.

[–]2IVIaskerade1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cruically, the article didn't say that they were opening successful businesses at that ratio. I wonder why?

It's easy to venture out when you've got beta bux to fall back on.

"Hey honey, I'm going to take out this $100,000 loan to turn my hobby of bead-necklace/cupcake/flower making into a business. When I get tired of it, we can just take it out of your 401k to pay off the principle."
