I read some interesting differences of opinion today. I've always assumed that confidence was a trait that women find attractive in men, but I've come across the idea that confidence while a good thing to have, isn't an attractive quality in it's own right, but rather, it's something that makes a guy stand out, he still has to have a reason for that confidence. Is this general consensus among women? Confidence makes you want to take a "closer look" at the guy, but isn't counted as a perk toward dating him, unless he has something backing his confidence?

I always thought confidence was similar to physical attractiveness - it's attractive in and of itself, not just a means to an end. Why would women be attracted to confidence itself? Well, I assume it's just part of what makes them women. It's like asking why are guys attracted to young, pretty girls. I'm not expert on this, but from an evo psyche standpoint, it makes perfect sense that women be attracted to a guy who is sure of himself.

But I've heard women saying that a confident guy who has nothing going for him is not attractive, but delusional. He has nothing backing that confidence.

Is there really such a thing as "empty confidence" though? Like the guy might not having anything going on in his life at his point in time, while still have legit reasons to be confident that just aren't obvious. For example, what if the guy is average in looks, has no success to speak of, but the source of his confidence is that he got alot of attention from girls in his teens?
