Women who treat pets like children? Why do they do this?

It's 'Nice Girl' behaviour. They don't actually want another person in their life, they want something that fulfills the good parts of a relationship without actually making any demands. In the same way "Nice Guys" want a someone they can make contracts with who will fulfill the contract.

My mother does this. She was all over my kids when they were young. There was some trouble as they got older, then they hit ten and really started showing their own personalities and she lost a lot of interest. She went back to her dogs for a few years, then my brother's wife had my nephew and she is all over him. She wants to project her own ideas onto what she is mothering and not have them annoyed by any actual personality. She likes kids when they are in that stage where they get excited over anything that you give them, once they reach the stage where you have to buy them a present that actually appeals to their interests, she is no longer interested.

I have never dressed my dog up or pushed him around in a baby carriage or read bed time stories to him but there are days when I definitely prefer his company to human company. He weighs 70 pounds I don't want to haul him around in a wagon or some such crap. I love dogs, and my current dog in particular. In fact, I don't think I will be able to get another Dutch Shepherd after this, I will switch to another shepherd breed. He is older now and has less stamina but when he was young we used to go hiking every weekend and run through creeks and mud, it was fun. We still have weekend jaunts just shorter ones.

Oooh, I like this post quite a bit actually.

Full disclosure, my wife works at a pet store, is a nutrition specialists, and we both worked for a time at a wolf-sanctuary. Our first dog actually came from a man who was hoarding dogs that he was under the impression were dingoes, I can not stress how not made up this is.

That being said, in the context of our two dogs, my wife and I call each other "Mom" and "Dad". I don't know how this started, but it is a part of our life. I'm the type of person that talks to his dogs, and I do indeed treat them like a member of the family.

The other thing being said, I definitely see a lot of types of people come into the pet store when I'm helping my wife stock the shelves. Maybe because we're in Montana I don't typically see dogs in carriages and the like, but I definitely see both men and women, typically older spoiling their dog. I've seen Vietnam vets bring in their pets for grooming and ask for bow ties, and I've seen women bring in their muddy dog after hiking in the mountains of Big Sky Country to wash it off in one of the "DIY baths.

So, while yes I'm using personal anecdotes as evidence, I think you're only looking for evidence that supports your theory. Also, dogs only live 12 years max? I don't mean to nit pick, but that's a generalization.

The bigger question is why do these women act as though they are doing it out of love for the animal, when they are doing it for their own entertainment?

Because women are solipsistic, lack true empathy, and think they can deny their submissive, baby incubating instincts without repercussions

Well... White / wealthy / entitled / feminist, women at least.

Obviously it's transference of the woman's desire for validation as a mother by a child she subconsciously feels too insecure to handle raising.
