I just wonder if the RP/BP divide means really living different lifestyles.

My BP/not-typically-masculine traits:

  • I don't watch sports at all. No football team to support etc. I have no idea how well is my country doing in football etc. I practice martial arts a bit but don't even watch that either. I will watch it later, to learn technique, but currently it is simply too quick for me, I don't see what is going on.

  • After 10 year of driving I got rid of my car because public transport is ridiculously good here (Vienna). Now I feel strangely emasculated, almost as if losing a nut. What car you drive is the most common measure of success and I feel like I am not competing anymore.

  • "Safe", not too ambitious career, and yes, IT. Married with a daughter and was not a big womanizer before.

  • Overweight, although the "manly" way (beer, more beer, even more beer (alcoholic), bacon, bread: not sweets nor chocolate, low sugar consumption but still a lot of carbs from beer and bread).

  • Used to lift when younger, lost interest, now exploring other sports, largely fighting types

  • Not fascinated by latest technology, not see it a form of competition to carry the latest phone or whatever. I don't even own a smartphone, just use a company issued one. Don't wear a watch, don't have an MP3 player, none of that.

  • Holidays typically just mean visiting parents

  • I basically don't spend money on anything competitive, anything that would elevate my status, however, the I kinda like designer clothes over plain ones, I like Diesel, Levis or Esprit, which may be interpreted as a not very masculine trait (interesting how stuff like Armani is usually designed by gay guys). It's just about them being made of finer material.

  • I don't own power tools, don't do much home improvement. In my defense, living on the third floor in a high-tech concrete cage not much is there to improve. Still it is weird that my wife assembles most of the IKEA furniture and stuff like that. She just likes "adult LEGO" more than me. I am not very much interested in spatial 3D stuff which is a requirement for toolmanship, and a typical masculine ability usually.

  • Few male friends. Two, exactly, but they live far away so just e-mail. I must admit most men simply scare me a bit, I dislike competitive attitudes for no good reason. When my wife decides to visit her two female friend who both have a larger social circle, I feel far comfortable with hanging out with the women. Thankfully they are all 35+ and not that talking about that giggly teenage girl shit anymore, that would bore me, now they are talking about where to buy carpets and what to do with unruly kids and grown-up stuff like that so I am OK with that.

My more masculine, RP-ish traits:

  • About zero interest in sweet, sugary food or drink (can still be fat, thank you)

  • Beer fiend (too much, alcoholic)

  • I don't listen to music much, but when I do, it is often country. Keith Urban, Tim McGraw (like his weird accent, is this the American South?)

  • I don't have a pet and have no interest at it, but if I had, it would be more like a German Shepherd than a cat. I don't understand Reddit's love of cats. Straight guys with cats are kinda strange a bit for me. I just don't know what they do with them.

  • Owning a small number of highly aggressive videogames. GTA and AC series, Elder Scroll series, Mount & Blade Warband & many mods. Not much else. It's all about fighting. However, absolutely no sports games, I owned FIFA 2010 I think and it bored the living hell out of me. That is more BP.
