To me, SMV implies objectivity. Each person has different preferences so whilst there are some characteristics that are prized by the majority, there is enough variation that talking about it as if it can be accurately measured as to me is implied by the use of market value is just wrong.

Basically my issue with SMV is that one man/woman's 2 is anothers 7

Some people prefer the iPhone, others prefer Android. Is one objectively better than the other? No, but there are core features that they share -- built-in camera, Facebook, good user interface -- and any phone that doesn't offer these features is practically DOA or only desired by a very small market (i.e. drug dealers who need burner phones).

But there are things generally found attractive. For example a fat guy losing 200 pounds will increase in SMV, will it not?

I agree, there are traits that will change how attractive you are. My point is that people value different traits differently. To take your example of a guy losing 200 pounds, one girl might not care too much as she might care more about personality compatibility or intelligence, whilst for someone else, that might be all the incentive they need to actually date the guy.

Most people don't go and look at someone and go, "oh look, red hair -5 smv, great biceps +3 points." I would be fine with it if it was called attractiveness as that loses the connotations of objectivity and transaction making whilst making it a more personal thing.

In general, but I go for tall slender brunettes. So, if this is a blonde guy and he's heavily muscled after losing all his weight, he hasn't gone up nearly as much for me as he has for someone who likes that look.

Fat fetishes are a thing. Not super common but it exists.

Things that increase smv increase your appeal to more people for example a man losing 200 lbs will make him attractive to a greater number of more hotter women

Not if we weighed 220 pounds to begin with :D

Such a thing as averages exist. Obviously there is no one single person on this planet who authoritatively dictates everybody else's SMV. Yes, to an extent, beauty is subjective.

However, you average out everybody's opinion of everybody else, and you start to get somewhere close to the general truth.

Basically my issue with SMV is that one man/woman's 2 is anothers 7.

Let's all be honest, that's not true at all. it's a nice thought to say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are some pretty clear objectives standards when it comes to attractiveness. if I asked you to rate the attractiveness of Adele, Katy Perry and Susan Boyle, I'm pretty sure 99.99 percent of men would all be in agreement on were they rank comparatively. the fact that I might give Katy Perry and 8.5 and you might ever say in 8.8 or 9, doesn't discount is the fact that we can both agree that she is hot.

If we're being honest, the effect of an individual's personal preference in terms of how they rate another`s attractiveness is actually pretty small compared to be objective standards of what is an is an attractive within our society. and further, I don't think we're doing people who aren't considered attractive any favors by lying to them about the nature of attractiveness.

Who cares?

'Out of your league'...'SMV disparity'...whatever

Am I supposed to be impressed that TRP invented a new term for something that's been around forever?

Because "out of your league" can refer to a variety of things. It could just mean there is a perceived disparity between you and the other person. It doesn't mean the disparity is there, because one could very well think highly of another person, or lowly of themselves. It's all perception, all of it. Also, attractiveness doesn't always imply that someone has more "worth" than someone else, just that they fit a person's notions of what is attractive. Again, all perception.

Edit: I don't dispute that SMV exists in some form (aka, some people are more attractive than others), but I don't believe that interaction is governed by this. Feeling inadequate is a normal thing for a lot of people (sadly), and I think a lot of the "out of my league" talk stems from that.

There have been discussions about this and we cant come to a conclusion on anything but before anyone proceeds, let simply give you a definition of SMV and then we can have a discussion on it

Definition

Sexual Market Value (SMV) is one's perceived value in the eyes of the opposite gender after all factors are taken into account.

This video, although not related, slightly touches on the subject

no no no, attraction is entirely case-by-case subjective and there are no observable commonalities. read more snowflake theory before shitposting
