Does marrying someone with less education mean “marrying down” economically? Not necessarily. When we look at the newlywed women who married someone with less education, we find that a majority of these women actually “married up.” In 2012, only 39% of newlywed women who married a spouse with less education out-earned their husband, and a majority of them (58%) made less than their husband.

Oops. Not so much a change in the narrative, then.

High-earning women eventually run out of options and deign to marry a man making less then she does.

Define: "more educated".

Is a woman with a masters degree in womens or gender studies "more educated" than a man with a bachelors degree in computer science?

If that's the metric they are using, then it's like saying that women earn 77% of what men earn. By using improper metrics, the statistics can say whatever they want.

Now consider that a woman with a masters degree in sociology might make $40,000 or even $50,000, a plumber can make $100,000 per year. What is that masters degree worth?

I think it would be interesting to track this along with marriages rates themselves. I think the answer to your question is people are getting married less because we're finding less of what we want in our potential partners.

I'm not sure how it conflicts with RP theory.

Education level doesn't make you alpha or beta. Sure it might help, but it really isn't the most determining factor. In fact having a beta husband under-your-thumb sounds exactly like RP theory.

I don't think it has anything to do with TRP at all other than to maybe show how women can fund their education for longer periods due to male support. Being more educated has nothing to do with who is more intelligent or dominate. Neither does it invalidate any of the generalized characteristics of women that are talked about in TRP.

In terms of the beta provider theory, men still dominate the majors with the highest earning potential. This pretty clearly outlined in the last paragraph of the article you linked:
