Staring in the street. What are the rules for eye contact when you meet someone's gaze? I look confident and have good body language and look up, but I've noticed some issues. Sometimes I'll notice someone looking and look back, and then it's a staring contest.

Prolonged eye contact is aggressive body language. With a male it could provoke a fight. With a female it could either stir attraction or fear and disgust.

If you happen to make eye contact with someone you should acknowledge them with a nod or a smile and then look away.

Everyone has been a bit harsh on you it seems. The goal here is to stop overthinking these situations. It doesn't really matter if you stare or look away, or do a bit of both. What matters is that you learn to see these situations for what they are: irrelevant. Sometimes I stare if I find the girl pretty of if I feel like staring. Sometimes I stare at a dude because I don't like the way he looks at me, sometimes I avert my eyes because I don't actually care about him ego tripping over his toughness. Just do it how it feels, but do it confidently, by choice, not by fear.

For example I used to avert my eyes from some girls, because I felt intimidated. Now I don't ever feel intimidated, but I still look away if I feel like it.

What..? Looking away can also mean you’re uninterested/want to avoid someone.

Eye contact is only part of it, you need to read their body language as a whole and stop being so autistic.

The deeper issue is that you give wayyy to many fucks if your constantly thinking about eye contact when walking past a random.

For god sake, the advice of holding eye contact is that if you are walking to a destination, don't be afraid of looking into someone's eyes.

Anyway, if you find yourself in a staring contest and if you have something else to do, smile and disengage. Otherwise, approach and start a conversation.
