Hi all. I have no idea if this is the appropriate sub for this question, but I’ve been a lurker for a little while now and figured this was probably the only place I could get truthful answers.

Quick background on me. My early childhood very traditional and was raised Roman Catholic in a Catholic and very conservative rural town, even attended Catholic Elementary School and then Catholic Preparatory High School etc. In my teen years, my parents divorced and it all kind of stopped. I was sent to public school and we fell out of the Church completely.

I’m older now and having never quite lost my faith and having recently discovered this community, I would really like to join and be active in the Christian church again, but I’m not really sure how to find where I belong. I don’t remember any of the Hymns or anything like that, but I’m not worried about learning that stuff. I’m more so looking for truthful information on finding a denomination that’s well-aligned with our faith and Christian values.

Like I said, I was raised Roman Catholic and there are many Churches in my area, but I’ve been really put off by all the scandals and happenings over the past few years as well as the fact that much of what I remember being taught felt a bit radical and seemed to deviate from what was written in Bible itself. The idea of contributing to or supporting such a thing makes me wary. I’m familiar with the Orthodox Christian Church also and what I know is appealing to me, but otherwise don’t know too much about it. There’s a lot of “Alliance” mega-Churches and non-denominational Churches near me among others, but I’m pretty unfamiliar with all others.

Anyway, I know that probably the best thing I could do is just go to each and feel them out, but in my conversations with other similar minded men who would consider themselves believers, but aren’t currently active in the Church the question and hesitation is pretty common and we don’t really know where to go to do proper research and get truthful answers. Most of us were raised Catholic, but are apprehensive of returning to it.

Does RPChristians have any guidance on finding the right denomination for those of us who are newcomers or returning to the Church as adults after a long time away. Obviously, any other related advice is welcome as well.
