I'm divorced with a child and have starting dating an old friend. It's only been 3 months but it's going quite well and he says he loves me and wants to spend his life with me. Early on he mentioned being a libertarian and not wanting to ever be married because he doesn't want the government involved in his life. I mentioned feeling positively about marriage but don't think I got it across that I'm only interested in dating if marriage is a possibility down the road. I definitely want to date someone for several years to avoid getting into another bad marriage.
What should I say, and how to say it so it doesn't sound like an ultimatum or too soon for this talk?
I have assets, so I was thinking of bringing it up by asking if he'd be cool with signing one if he were ever to get married, since I know another of his concerns is protecting his savings. I don't think he gets why people get married at all, so are there reasons I should give for why I want it? He's very independent and does his own laundry and managing his life, so the main wifely duty would be sex and commitment. He's ready to move in together now, which I think he's done fast with exes before. I'm not completely opposed to living together before marriage, but it would have to be down the road.
Thank you for any advice.
