What Disney did to star wars is unbelievable. They spent billions just to promptly ruin the franchise in a couple of movies. I kind of enjoyed TFA and gave them the benefit of the doubt. But TLJ showed they have absolutely no idea what they are doing.

Apparently, a lot of drama for women is intentionally vague about the female protagonist in order to allow the viewer/reader to imagine herself in that role.

I'm getting this insight from a review of the Twilight series I saw once. If I remember correctly, it said there's very little backstory for the main character, and what there is tends to be vague and applicable to everyone. "She's an awkward teenager" and "she doesn't fit in." Readers are meant to think, "whoa! Me too!" And the symbolism is pretty shallow. Her name is "Bella Swan" - literally "beautiful swan" because no woman believes she's an ugly duckling.

By contrast, the male characters are well fleshed out, and hilariously prototypically alpha. They're rich, ambitious, successful. We often get detailed family histories (so that women can fantasize about the lineage of those sweet sweet genes).

Try to imagine 50 Shades of Gray but with this dynamic reversed - where you get a detailed and specific backstory about the girl, but little or nothing about the man; oh and also he's not a billionaire. LOL. Nobody would like that book.

I'm sure there are examples of literature for young men that are equally as shallow in terms of character development, but I doubt any are as popular. See, the central theme of a story that appeals to men is something called "the hero's journey." And a core component of the journey is a demonstration, early on, that the hero is not equal to the challenge he faces.

In a hero's journey, the hero is shown failing. The journey he takes is what changes him and makes him better so that he can succeed. This is what men identify with - this is what we fantasize about - improving ourselves so that overcome. We fantasize about earning victory.

Women tend not to want that kind of story. They know, at a subconscious level, that their value is intrinsic - this is just a fact of our species. They're valuable because they're women. They can't identify with the concept of building yourself up from worthlessness.

To be clear though, they absolutely do want a story where a female protagonist wins. It's just that, they don't need that protagonist to have changed (taken a journey) in order to win. They're fine with a story about a woman (and her natural, inborn, "girl power") that is held down by outside oppression - she wins simply by deciding to unleash her girl power, which of course, she had all along.

And once again, I fully appreciate the fact that there are stories popular with both sexes which do not follow this trend, just like there is variation in expression of sexuality itself. But for the majority of people, the reason they like what they like is a consequence of forces of natural selection. And it's useful for us to try to understand those causes. So for example, there's a very real and specific reason men tend to like an hourglass figure - and the fact that you can point to exceptions doesn't change that fact or the value in understand the reason for it.

I'll end my rant with a hot take: I think it's fine for corporations or authors to pander to the interests of their audience. Disney has decided, for political reasons, to include a Mary Sue in Star Wars because women like that shit. *shrug* ok. Fine. I don't like it so I guess I wont watch it. No big deal. I don't see it as "destroying my childhood."

I kinda liked The Force Awakens. Sure, it relied on the nostalgia factor a lot (seeing the main old actors was great), but... another Death Star? Come on. And yet, I felt like a kid again, so I guess they did something right. The Last Jedi, however, sucked Jabbah the Hutt's extraterrestrial dong. I could try very hard and overlook the numerous issues with the film, but they ruined Luke Skywalker, and that's something I can't forgive. I guess I'll go see the last film in the new trilogy anyway, but my expectations are microscopic.

This is why I dislike Star Wars fans. I enjoyed the movies growing up but never became obsessed about them. The really obsessive Star Wars fans will watch all the shitty propaganda movies that they shit out now, complain, then watch it 5 more times while buying every single piece of Star Wars merchandise.

If die hard fans had a spine, they'd stop giving Disney their money and Disney would be forced to do a 180 like Gilette but they won't, and this is why we can't have nice things.
