He will surely meet with divine retribution. Regardless of what abilities a man may possess, he will be of little use if rejected by others. People don't slight those who are eager to help and serve well, and who readily exhibit humility to their associates."

This is a passage from Hagakure (the samurai book akin to the Japanese version of the Art of War) written in the mid-1600s. It echoes the special flowers of any society who believes they are unique and above all else. I have been guilty of such egotism in my past. Reading this passage resonated deeply with me. I saw how foolish I was to think that I was special. Undoubtedly this stemmed from a deep lack of self esteem and confidence. Perhaps even lack of love and friendship. We are all of equal standing in this world. Somewhere during my journey, I had stopped believing in this foolish ideal. I saw myself for what I truly am, just another man on his path. And subsequently looked inward for peace instead of outward for validation.

If you think you are above others merely because you are special, you may simply be using this belief to cover something you are missing. Look deeply to find the flaws in yourself, for all of us have flaws. Being regarded as 'different', 'odd', or 'special' is not always a good thing. Frequently, this leads to subtle rejection from society. Keeping your head down and working within yourself will oft be beneficial in both the short and long run.
