Those who believe in the fictitious afterlife can never truly understand that.

Precisely why such a belief is bad. Acting on delusions or other falsehoods almost always leads to sub-optimal decision making.
Take the case of the 12-year-old girl who killed herself in order to be with her dad in heaven. "Dear Mum. Please don't be sad. I just miss daddy so much, I want to see him again."

If the afterlife myth wasn't a lie, then there would be nothing tragic about this. She would be in eternal bliss with her loved one and her mother would join them as soon as she likes. But the afterlife myth is a lie, and that's why this story is so tragic.
Side note: Christians might argue that those who commit suicide go to hell, but if that were the case, then again, the Christian god would be utterly evil. Also, Christian doctrine teaches that a sin is only committed if a person knows something is morally wrong, and this girl clearly did not consider her actions wrong. Finally, this story is tragic precisely because the girl lost the one and only life she'll ever have, not because she's being tortured in some fantasy dungeon.
