Well Daenerys totally lost it once she realized her influence was slipping and her allies were merely there because they feared for their lives.

Even "you'll always be my queen" Jon was starting to pull away from her.

tbh I could sense her as manipulative from the first time I saw her way back in the early days of GoT... Never liked her at all.

Considering this turn of events, could it be argued that GoT is actually more red than some thought?

It's a metaphor of leaders going mad when they reject good advisors and good people start working behind their backs - for the country's and leader's own benefit. Then they feel like everybody is betraying them and start lashing out, trying to rule by fear, not loyalty.
