Same thing here. Sometimes, when I look around me, I see a mass of people moving with the flow. Not questioning anything. Buying into social media and the herd mentality.

But I suppose what you're describing can also be seen leveling up as a MGTOW. When we go our own way we're telling society we value self and responsibility over conformity. Hell, I value it so much I don't broadcast it.

It does feel antisocial at times, but so what? I don't claim to be better than anyone else - just different. My own drum sounds better to my ears than anything they've come up with collectively.

I don't believe in hanging out with people you don't like if there's no good reason to . If you said something like you were trying to network and build connections then that's one thing but if not then why waste the energy and time ? You can be polite and cordial at work and then just let them know you have plans that night . make up something vague " catching up with old buddies" or something . Or just leave it at "sorry I made other plans tonight but keep me in mind next time" after enough fo those they should get the message.

I'm shocked the married mens wives let them go outside by themselves anymore.

Personally, I avoid every event which can be avoided and ESPECIALLY if alcohol is involved. Something like the upcoming Christmas party.

We are having a Christmas party at a local place for our department. We have to go on our own time, pay for our own shit, and hang out with our bosses. Nothing against anyone but no thank you. Coworkers keep asking me to go and my boss keeps pressing me but I just told him: not going. Avoid any social event you don’t want to attend regardless of anything.

Well, I worked in a few restaurants, and I just blatantly avoided outside of work events, and when I was asked I'd tell them I saw their ugly face enough at work and didn't need to see more of them on my free time. This made them laugh, and all was ok.

I'm left to believe that this was due to the nature of people who end up working in a restaurant, I guess. I mean, it never crossed my mind they they'd feel crossed. It's all like fuck this, and fuck that in a restaurant, lol

I told the organizer that I lean heavily on the introverted scale and prefer to not be forced to go to a social gathering because I find it draining to be around people.

Also if I'm not enjoying myself, the people around me probably won't feel good about it either.

Just be open and honest about it. As for being an outcast, as long as you are a good at your job (and your job doesn't rely on social interaction) it won't matter.

I am not sure. I used to do this at my last place, and it was very difficult for me to offer any input in group projects. It is like I am an outsider of the group.

I typically don't like crowded places or socializing so I can relate. People need to earn my friendship and make it worth my time, I'm not the type to go out and talk to people just to fill in silence or get energized from it. It's the opposite for me, I find it draining.

I like a lot of my co-workers, but going to work social events is only giving yourself an opportunity to get into an uncomfortable spot. You could get boozed and get yourself into trouble, or someone else could and drag you down with them.

On the flipside though, it tends to get noticed if you green light work events all the time. I think I probably need to make an appearance once in a blue moon to not look like the anti-social asshole I am.

I just say, "I have a work life, and I have my personal life. I dont try to blend the 2 together" Honesty, seems to work better than trying to ninja your way out. People like a spine rather than a deceiver.

These past couple of weeks, coworkers have been setting up happy hour on fridays and i havent gone to any. Come friday, I want to relax and do my own thing. I dont want to be at a bar to "socialize".

I'd make up a story like you have family out of state and can only spend time with some of them that day/weekend etc.

Thereby avoiding an awkward situation.
