Ancient cultures -- like say the Greeks -- were IMHO actually a LOT wiser in this regard.
There were certain parts of the home set aside exclusively for MEN, and others for WOMEN with "common" areas being mainly utilitarian (bedrooms, kitchen) or open air courtyards.
And when they "set aside" and meant EXCLUSIVE, they generally really MEANT it:
The Greek homes' Andron (Men's area, generally biggest enclosed "room" in the house, akin to a modern "salon" or "living room" and if wealthy enough with an adjacent "study" or "workshop" area) often had separate street-side entrance ...so that HIS friends/guests (including "business" stuff) wouldn't HAVE to encounter women or kids in the "common area" courtyard (agin a "utility" area containing the well or cistern, usually un-roofed & "open air" and akin to an enclosed patio or "backyard").
Meanwhile the Gynaeceum (womens' area) was typically upstairs (and often "in the back"; over or adjacent to the kitchen, etc) and was THEIR space (think "woman cave" LOL)..
Moreover all of that was no accident -- that arrangement had evolved over time, and was based on their (IMO pretty damned thorough) understanding & acceptance of human nature -- both MALE and FEMALE nature (including hypergamous tendencies) and you could even add in that they took into account the "natural" behaviors of young children as well.
-- Part of the problem with MODERN homes and "society" is that generally men have worked OUTSIDE the home -- meaning that women (their wives AND kids) have far more time and incentive to "take over" everything -- and the men are often far too exhausted to object.

I feel the same way.
A friend of mine recently moved in with his girlfriend. She let him make the extra room his "man cave" despite the fact that he pays for a larger % of the rent and overhead.
If I live somewhere shouldn't the entire place be mine? Why should all the stuff I like be relegated to one room?
