No. Social isolation is deadly if you end up choking on something and needed a second-set of hands to save yourself.

Unless you are the kind of person who needs constant validation from others or is too extroverted to entertain any sort of inner-world.

Trust me, being alone is better than being with terrible people.

Isolation is beautiful. I was born with an innate distrust and distaste of humans, same as my father, and presumably his father too. My record is 8 days without saying a word to anyone before work finally forced me to open my mouth. I could go for far longer.

It is only harmful to those who are isolated yet don't want to be.

You know how schools treat boys essentially as "defective" girls? They get disciplined & drugged until their behavior mimics that of a girl. In the same way, introverts get treated essentially as "defective" extroverts by society.

I saw a thing a while back talking about a need for a "Declaration of Interdependence". This was in contrast to the well known "Declaration of Independence".

Independence, isolation, loner. Think Individualism.

Interdependence, "community", tribal. Think Collectivism.

Collectivism is the enemy. Collectivism strips you of your humanity.

The thing is, if you have the internet, you are never really alone. You can post on reddit, watch livestreams, play games with others over discord, etc.

I do think that total social isolation is harmfull for even the most extreme solitude lovers, however this differs alot per person. But I do agree that people look down on people who like to be alone instead of going to a party and getting drunk, because their is always a certain pressure to be social. I mean just think of the ingrained message by pop culture, that if you are by yoursef on a friday night then you are sad/loser/alone ect.

So to sum up, I dont believe a person can be in total solitude for a prolonged time, but I do agree that being alone is made to sound worse then it is.

With the internet you are never alone. Also if you have a job you are still meeting /interacting with people. I guess it could maybe get dangerous if you are truly isolated from communicating with others for a long time and can't find a workaround that suits you.

I myself am for e.g. living alone, far from family, never had a girlfriend, haven't had friends for the last decade, avoiding parties at work and besides bad health issues am still quite happy (well I admit I keep some contact with my family and visit sometimes).

Are their health problems if an introverted or socially anxious person is forced to talk in front of groups of people and interact with them?

Depends on your friends. Good friends are made through hobbies (chess club, karate, the gym) rather than partying, doing drugs. I'd rather have good friends than no friends. I'll take no friends over bad friends.

It's mostly nonsense... first it is nearly impossible today to be completely alone. You are in contact with society constantly. Even the fellow who hid out in Maine for nearly 30 years -- Christopher Knight -- depended on stealing from cabins that contained stuff society made and he used. What most folks mean by going it alone is few social contacts. That's entirely possible because while you may not be an active member of society it is still going on around you and you benefit from it. Even the homeless and transient are dependent upon a functioning society. Where there can be problems is accidents, illness, and attacks. People come in handy then.

When I'm feeling lonely I go out and be social. It's an itch to scratch, like craving a certain vegetable. The studies are about averages. A lot of variation can be obscured by averages (especially considering how extrema are often discarded).

I do find it hard to believe that there are people that would rather shock themselves than to be left alone with their own thoughts.

Yes it is deadly or harmful. It will cause people to get physically and mentally ill. I can attest to that. It's probably much worse if you suffer from depression as I have most of my adult life. Humans do need regular contact with other humans to function normally. That doesn't mean you have to have friends or anything but you do need to get out and be around other people from time to time.

If you isolate yourself long enough you'll probably develop some anxiety when you do have to go out and about. You could become detached from reality. You could go insane. It really depends on the length of the isolation and the reason for it.

If you go on a spiritual journey in some foreign country by yourself for a month or two, it will probably be a fun and healthy experience. If you get solitary confinement in prison for months at a time 23 hours a day, you might cut your own balls of or kill yourself. It's not black and white, there's a gray area in regards to isolation. Overall it is harmful though the longer it lasts.

I think it can be unhealthy and destructive. I say that as a severe introvert. Isolation really isn't helping me, and I am surrounded by people. People are strange when you're a stranger. I kinda hope it does kill me, at this point.
