How does TRP affect men's interactions if there are no women around?

Despite what women want you to think, men are very good at sensing social interactions. "Sensing" or "Intuiting" would be the key words here. Women seem to always have to verbally communicate what's going on in the group. Some people assert that this is a residual effect of the hunter-gatherer times, when women had to communicate with others to keep the group healthy. Men, although they do not speak on it as much, definitely sense that a man is higher or lower than him on the ladder. From what I can tell, this is especially true in younger men, as they are unsure of their own ability.

Everything affects this. Bob beat you in Mario Kart? BOB IS BETTER THAN YOU. Bob is texting a girl and you're not? BOB IS BETTER THAN YOU! These of course aren't concrete. These like actual physical/sexual/intellectual prowess hold greater weight than smaller things like video games, grades, number of friends. If John is banging 10s every day after rugby practice and can discuss politics at an intricate level, JOHN IS BETTER THAN YOU. Even if you can kill him in Starcraft.

But as you've implied, there are fewer places in the world where a real "pecking order" is in place. Those places are sports and the workplace. Outside of that, these lesser signs of dominance are the currency exchanged between men. Confident, alpha males don't give a fuck about it, but the beta males of the group are strangely obsessive about their place. So they either challenge the alpha male, or they bicker amongst themselves.

So in my experience, I think it is less of a "chest-thumping", and more of a internal, vague point system.

The only way you can be an alpha male is to be better than every other male. You can do this by 1. fucking anyone and everyone you want, or 2. being stronger, faster, smarter, better than every other man. To a man who cares only about women, your place with women is very important to him. To a man who no longer cares only about women, your place among the other men signifies your status.

In male groups, there is (usually) a hierarchy, but it's an unspoken one that's only identifiable if you're looking for it. When you add women to a well established group, there may be jockeying for position among the betas, but the groups Alpha (or occasionally Alphas) maintain there position and are rarely challenged within the group. Adding new males to a group will cause 'chest-thumping' as you put it, mostly in the presence of women.
