Hight as a genetic trait is a bit wishy washy, stuff like eyes, hair, build, and health are going to be better indicators of your relation than height.

Actually height is a decent genetic trait. Its a polygenic trait, which means its governed by lots and lots of different genes. Whilst random recombination can allow for some unusually different children, normally they'll end up quite close to each other.

Thinks like eye colour, hair, and even in some circumstances skin colour are less reliable, because they're predominantly governed by singular genes. Case in point, my sister is strawberry blonde, pale as fuck skin, wheras I have black hair and I'm a permanent tan, because I inherited my mothers mutation that affects melanin production and she didn't. Its 1 single point mutation (1 letter changes only), but it means at a casual glance me and my sister don't look related. In mixed race couples, random recombination can lead to some kids that are basically black, and others who are whiter than me.

Basically you want traits like height, build, or some aspects of health. Not eyes, hair, or skin colour (again, only really if mixed race or rare genes for that last one). You want ones that are governed by clusters of genes, not singular alleles.

Yes, you're absolutely correct. But that's relatively rare, and tends to be mirrored in parents and children. Exceptions do exist, but they're unusual. Asia nowadays is a good example, grandparents and later generation parents are much smaller than their children, because of the super rapid economic growth of countries like china. But in general they're quite stable, with a few exceptions that don't really 'count', same as how somebody getting their feet chopped off wouldn't be a useful sample for comparison when you're talking about height.

In most instances, people will grow to between about 85 and 99% of their max genetic potential height, with most of that variance being socio economic status, and serious childhood illnesses. Thinking in terms of %'s is helpful. I'm 6ft, relatively high SES. So my 100% probably looks like say 6ft 1", whereas somebody who is 5ft 10", but poorer may have a comparable 100% "base height", but will be a bit smaller. But if thats true, their parents are probably in a similar situation, and will thus also be ~2 inches shorter than they could otherwise have been.

Environment matters, but its not an independent event for the offspring relative to the parent. There's lots of correlation.
