Imagine an appliance that can do anything you need it to do: cooking, taking care of children, listening to problems, massages, driving you places, it's a space heater, fixes other appliances, opens jars, and if you're so inclined you can let it attempt to please you sexually. If it ever breaks down its not your fault, if you ever get bored of it no one blames you, if yours is nicer than your friends' they all get jealous and if anything happens to it or you get bored of it or it fails to perform as expected you are compensated and/or provided for for years... until you can find another!

On top of all this it costs you nothing! In fact... although this gets in the way of its other functions, it can even bring in a substantial wage, often more than your own.

Resource Extraction. Men age like wine, women like milk. Generally speaking they do not have the long term earning power that men do. They feel better if they can bag a man with money who can provide for her so she doesn't have to work. Women don't want to work unless the work is vanity(i.e. being a model). Personally, I like the ownership. Having his name. Having the same name as our kids, because as things stand today, other configurations signal lower class families. I'm not a babymomma. Of course, the more men reject marriage, the more that will change.

All of the old benefits still apply to a woman who holds up her end - convenient paperwork/legal/financial access, minimal questions asked in an emergency, I'm his wife. I'm the one that gets to meet his physical and emotional needs, and I derive quite a bit of satisfaction from doing so. Gives the feeling of security as I age.

Being married to an acceptable man ("acceptable" varying on her current opinion of her SMV) is a huge status boost to a woman. Also the drama and excitement of the wedding. Underlying this (although they will rarely acknowledge this to themselves) is the legal entitlement to their husband's resources (they'll be "taken care of").

Given that being married is a status boost, it also stands to reason they won't normally initiate divorce unless they feel assured they can snag another husband of equal or better quality than their current husband. That many do wind up never remarrying shows they miscalculated their SMV post-divorce.

The wedding is literally the highlight of the marriage for them, a big social recognition that she has a man catering to her every need. After that, the sheen wears off. Women benefit from marriage because if they can find a guy dumb enough to do it, he will usually be of a higher lifetime SMV percentile rank than herself. Granted, at the time they start dating, they may be of equal rank, but as they age, her SMV will drop below his. Of course that sucks for the guy, because by committing and staying faithful to her, he basically screws himself out of the younger, hotter girls he could have had if he had just stayed single.

Usually what I tell women is that I explain to them that I do like the idea of marriage, but that for the times I actually wanted a commitment to a woman, she quickly upgraded to a guy she liked more (probably one a little higher on the Alpha spectrum than me), so that commitment really didn't provide me any security. While I like the idea of commitment in theory, in practice it just ends up being a disadvantage to me.

When talking to them about open relationships, you need to emphasize what advantages it has to them, you respect freedom to find the guy that loves her most. That way she will not view you protecting your own interests as being selfish. Of course if women were smart investors, they would keep their hypergamous instincts in check and choose a man of a more equal lifetime SMV rank. But the long term benefit and stability of finding a Poindexter when they're still young is all but lost on modern women. If a woman can't see this benefit, then her expectations are likely to be inflated and marrying her will likely be a net loss to you in the long term.

It IS kind of funny that women are the ones clinging on to marriage. The vows (nearly all) are clearly direct assaults on female hypergamy (esp in sickness and in poor).

If you have any kids , there is no difference in most states/western countries. Even if you don't have kids the separation agreement is often similar regardless after a few years cohabitating.

To be honest, I believe its the fact that they can sense an anger in a man when he openly says he doesn't believe in marriage. And they have every right to feel that way.
