Hmm, I think you are right. There is some anthropological evidence that most foods in the past came from gathering with only a little from hunting. Alot of gathering was done by women and hunting usually by men, but I think men would have done some gathering as well.

I think in a survival situation it is logical to kill animals in order to survive. On the other hand, in an agricultural society that has an excess of food, I think it is illogical to kill animals for eating, because it is not necessary and results in many negative consequences (including reduced mortality which reduces survival).

Extending beyond that, it's worth pointing out that men do feel emotions (obvious I know). We are sometimes even ruled by them, if you wanna call the sex drive and the hormonal/neurological responses associated with it "emotional"... then there certainly are times when men are not governed by rationality. On the whole though we are more logical and stoic. I think it's a misconception though that being logical/rational means being devoid of emotion. In many cases we can't be rational without emotion. It's just that emotions need to be put in their proper place.

For example, let's pretend to agree that killing an eel is bad because it is a living sentient being. Emotion of empathy tells us not to kill this creature. However, in a situation of scarcity the eel is more valuable and necessary for survival, so the need for survival (logic) trumps the emotion of empathy. This is called "stoicism". On the other hand, in a situation of plenty killing an eel becomes unnecessary. In agrarian civilization we have excess food, and can live off plant food without the need for killing animals. Then the logical choice is to listen to the emotion of empathy and not kill the eel.

So I reject that men are not emotional, it's just a smart man learns to put his emotions in their place and be stoic when necessary. Stoicism is not an absence of emotions either (as I have explained), it is simply not allowing your behavior to be dictated purely by emotion.
