I'm curious how many guys were pushed into "going their own way" by a specific relationship disaster, such as a bad relationship, bad breakup, or horrible divorce? This would be in contrast to those of us who finally just gave up after years of trying to find a relationship, and being disappointed with what we could find (if anything). With me, it's really a combination of both. At some point in college, I got tired of being by myself and decided I was really going to make an effort to find a relationship. I spent ten years trying and ultimately got shockingly little interest for the amount of time and effort I put into my search. Then I had my most serious relationship, which lasted about two years and included an engagement. I didn't lose nearly as much as those of you who have been through a bad divorce, but by the end of that relationship, being by myself seemed like a pretty good deal.

Ever since, I honestly still fairly often browse the dating websites for fun. Once in a great while, I'll actually write to one of them. But honestly, my heart hasn't really been in it, since my last relationship (now over seven years ago). It just doesn't seem right that it's so difficult to get a response from someone that is attractive. And then, to make matters worse, if somehow you do, then it ends up being something bad, not good! :-)

Knowing the low probability of a response, and the likely possibility that even if I got a response, it's likely not leading to any kind of a relationship, and then even if it did, not even being sure that I'd even want a relationship anymore...these are all things that make me rarely even try to talk to a woman anymore.

So anyway, what led you here: a particular horrible relationship experience, or a gradually building disillusionment with the relationship world? Or both (such as me)?

If anyone cares to get into details about just how unfair you feel things can get, that would be interesting too. How bad did things get to make you want to "go your own way"? As for me, there is far more to the relationship issues that I dealt with than I have time to write right now.
