Ladies:
I am taking a class right now on children's illustration. We are supposed to choose a story and re-illustrate it. For sentimental reasons, I have chosen to do The Little Mermaid. Part of the project is to do some research about the story. I just listened to the audio of the Hans Christian Anderson version.
Where can I begin with how much is WRONG with this story?
This is a story about a young woman who has a lovely fantasy life. she lives in the ocean, has a supportive family, beautiful, and the ocean is bigger than land, no capitalism, no striving, just wonderful life full of pearls and singing. She then gives it all up for a CHANCE to convince a complete imbecile to fall in love with her. Instead, he chooses to marry a younger and more beautiful princess that his parents chose for him to join their lands even after promising her that he would not marry anyone else. He treats her like a dog. ALLOWING her to sleep on a cushion outside his room. He has slave girls. and not only that she gives up her beautiful singing voice, and every step she takes with her new legs is like walking on knives. she gives up so much to be with him because she LOVES him. He knows that she loves him, too. So he marries the other girl, and she's supposed to die. Her sisters sell their hair to give her a knife to kill him before she wakes up, and she can't do it because she LOVES him too much. She doesn't even know him. Talk about attachment issues. He's an IDIOT! She could have lived for 300 years as a mermaid. So when she dies she is somehow rewarded to live out 300 years in some kind of afterlife limbo, and then she can die like a human person with a soul. That's her consolation prize for not killing him. If she did kill him she could have lived a wonderful 300 year life as a mermaid. She's only 15 years old!

I still want to illustrate this story, but I have to make it different. This is such a terrible message for women. Any ideas?

Maybe he will have to sell his dick to the sea witch to have a chance to get her to fall in love with him. He could go to the sea, or he could sell his dick to give her legs. What do you all think? How can i recreate this story to be WHOLESOME. Like a good story to tell your daughter that doesn't give her the message give up everything to be with an IDIOT.

The Little Mermaid is the biggest Pickmeisha of all time. I never knew.
