I am currently dating a man that is my best friend - I've never felt so comfortable and intimate and open with someone before. We have a tender and passionate relationship for three years. We can watch TV together, we can discuss politics together, we're both artistic and inspire each other, we have similar humor, we joke around together, and we have the perfect dynamic - he's dominant, does all the driving and leading, and I'm submissive, I do all the cooking and homemaking. I love spending time with him, and I confide in him everything.
Only problem is, my parents do not approve. My parents do not approve because this man is not of the same culture as we are. We are two different ethnicities. He does not speak the language that my family speaks at home.
However, I can make an argument about this. My brother married a woman of our same culture, but she barely speaks the language. She and my brother speak English to each other. So, in a sense, it does not matter that my boyfriend does not speak our language - my brother's wife doesn't either, she just looks more like us.
My parents always recommend that I find someone of my own culture, but I feel strongly worried that even if I do, I might not love him in the same way I love my current boyfriend. I would always be married to one man for the outer image and in love with another.
Is this fair? Any advice? Are my parents just close minded?
