The new HONY story has me feeling a lot of emotions. Went from a survival story to 40 years of emotional neglect in .2 seconds.

Yes. Thank you. How is it some incredible love story when Cheryl literally states that she was “walking on eggshells” for decades? I’ve been scrolling through all the “omg this is romance, this is love, this deserves a Pulitzer” comments on the last post in the series like... what the fuck? I guess our cultural ideal of “love” has a lot do with women graciously accepting deep neglect and pushing through misery at home (& at work) for their entire lives. 🤮

Side note... I hate when people seem to use the HONY comment section for self-promotion. Imagine already being a celebrity with millions of fans/followers, and still having the need to seek attention and insert yourself into the spotlight... on a platform that is about shifting the spotlight to “everyday” people.

I read this story earlier today, and I found it heart breaking. This woman lived a lie. She lived with the ghost of this man’s past and blamed herself and prayed over him and spent FORTY YEARS trying to make their marriage work because that’s what she was taught. A wife stays. Supports. Suffers in silence.

She took him back after his release, having fought for him and advocated for him. And her “rule” is that she basically gets to be equal partners now. That just...SUCKS.

The only thing I think we have to all really keep in mind here is the age of this couple. Their generation, their upbringings, their culture. My mom stayed in a miserable marriage. I left mine. Women are different in younger generations. Cheryl is taking the stand she’s comfortable taking. It’s her choice. It’s not the one I would make, but at least she is setting her own path forward now.
