Edit: I’m not thinking of dating him, or still in touch with him. This is fully in the past. The reason I’m posting here is exactly as I said - it’s really weighing on me and I’m not sure what to take away from that experience - I’ve had a lot of “move on” comments about it in the past but the whole point is I can’t and I’m really heartbroken over it.

I knew I really liked him at one point but a relationship wasn’t practical for me because of family/life reasons, in addition to me not trusting him - so it’s not that I was playing games

He said he wanted to see me before he left the country, but got fed up of waiting and ghosted, and I delete him from social media.

From what you say, it seems like he was avoiding you before he left the country, and that's why you ghosted him in the first place. That was kind of obnoxious of him if he was truly interested. Your initial gut instinct was right. He wasn't being straightforward with you. I'm guessing he had other "plates".

Him backtracking and acting lovey-dovey was a way to rope you back in so he could possibly sleep with you. Him not bringing a condom was concerning.

I remember feeling really sad on that date because I felt for a moment that maybe he was a nice guy but I was never going to trust him and he already didn’t trust me, and I wanted to tell him maybe we should end it.

Block that shit out of your mind, really. You might have felt guilty because he was pouting because you didn't want to go to his place. He wanted to bang. We women shouldn't feel compelled to pity-fuck or love a guy because we feel sorry for him.

I think we grow up with so many fake romantic movie tropes and love songs that our concept of reality becomes warped. We fall in love with Prince Charmings who don't really exist "Oh, deep down he's such a Nice Guy! Deep down he really loves meeee!" That sweet guy in your imagination is a mirage. From what it sounds, he was super flakey with you to begin with and disappeared without contacting you before he left the country when you guys were initially dating each other/ seeing each other. He fucked it up right from the start, and you were right to ghost him.
