It's really terrifying that woman can't truly ever be friends with men. This friend of yours knows you're out of his league and tried low effort then upped his game by mulling over it a bit. Yes, that's a quick change of pace but all his good conversation skills and you entertaining it as friendship for so long has given him hopes that he could make his move if the chance arose which it did.

You did good!! I'd cut back on the frienship with him if I were you. To you it may be platonic but its never that way to a man.

I just want to point out one thing though, you didn’t just say no. You told him no, with the explanation that sports aren’t your thing. This made him go the more direct route (dinner) because he was testing the waters on if he could ask you out. When you said no with the sports qualifier he knew he had to actually ask you out on a real date, if that’s what he wanted.

I’m only pointing it out because “No” is a complete sentence, no qualifications necessary. Many women forget that, and men take advantage of that (although he seemingly did not in a argumentative way ). They will often continue to push boundaries, and if you think about it he kinda did here by changing tack to his real destination: a date.

Just a friendly reminder that “No, thank you” is a’ok on its own.
