Don't say anything. Block his personal number, don't engage with him when you are by yourselves. Get a date with someone else. He's breadcrumbing you btw. Also...maybe look for a transfer? Or a different job altogether.

Fix this by disengaging and moving on with your dignity intact. He's twice your age, you can't die old and build a life with this person, you are embarrassing yourself the longer you let this crush continue.

Please block. As someone who became involved with a distant person, it became harder and harder to distance myself the longer it went on.

I realize it might hurt to hear this, but the way he’s communicating is showing he’s interested in the attention. You’re entertainment to him. No great love story starts with “it was really hard at first because he was so inconsistent, and I questioned my own self-worth SO much”.

I can see you know this intellectually. Next time you feel an urge to contact him, really consider: will this feel good in the long run? Not just right now? Next week?

Edit: Also - it’s okay to make mistakes with people. Honestly it is. When we crucify ourselves we just keep ourselves repeating that same pattern, more often than not.

Frankly if this is your boss and there’s such a huge age gap, he’s taking advantage of you. I would seek a new job the next opportunity that you get. We don’t know if this dude is likely to try to use his power to manipulate you. Protect yourself by getting out.
