How do you deal with a partner that while sweet, loving, and just absolutely amazing most of the time can sometimes turn into a bit of a narcissistic asshole when he’s pissed off ?? I’m not looking for people to tell me “dump him” or he’s “toxic”. We have a good relationship it’s just that I think everyone has their toxic traits and you have to deal with it at one point or another and we’re just doing it while we’re together because we value each other and what we have. This feels like the right sub for this.

Okay, look, don’t get wrong, I can be a lot to deal with. I have a big personality, I’m neurotic, ENFP/4w5 (if that means anything to you) , ADHD, anxiety, ptsd. He has his hands full, to say the least. That’s my point. Like he has his own shit to deal with too, ya know ? It can be hard I think to deal with someone else’s triggers while already trying to deal with your own shit and I think that’s where we have a problem. My partner considers himself to be an empath and I would say that I do agree with that. I just think he has an ego problem as well.

Here’s how it goes: I fuck something up. Lose something. Break something. Make us late. Do something he has told me he doesn’t like . Make some kind of mistake or fuck something up. Then it starts an issue. The thing is, I have PTSD from growing up in an emotionally abusive household and a narcissistic relationship/friendship I had. The thing is, when he gets mad he has an issue of just going off and saying a bunch of really mean/hurtful shit he doesn’t mean. So after a while of all these fights, I hit a breaking point. I have made an effort to distance myself from that kind of toxicity so it had been a while since I’d dealt with anything like this and I was in a really good place. Now after everything I’ve been through I have just started to completely shut down and even start having a panic attack when he gets upset

At this point I’m more the problem than he is and it’s really not good because of his ego problem I’m like triggering him and he’s starting to lose his grip on reality. I don’t mean to make him sound crazy, he’s not, the ego is just very powerful. I believe most of it to come from trauma.

I need advice from ladies who get how it is. Not everyone is perfect. Everyone is gonna have their shit. When you find your person you find your person. We are each other’s people. This man is my life partner, I’m sure of that. What I want to know is has anyone else been through anything similar ? Or have any advice for someone 2.5 years into a relationship ?

We just got a cat and moved in together. I really love him. I am lucky to have him. Truly. He is the sweetest most loving man and I can’t wait to have a house and a family with him one day. I just need to become my best self so I can be the best partner for him I’m 24 and he is 26. I’m really committed to this relationship and making it last, I feel like we are at a crucial time in our lives where we need to be nurturing each other and not draining each other’s energy.

Any advice is very much appreciated and please try to stay away from any negativity about my relationship or my situation. I’m only looking for people who genuinely care and want to help, not the opinions of those who have already made up their mind about my situation.

thank you 😊 🤗

EDIT: without going into too much detail we are both recovering from an extremely codependent relationship and attempting to instead move towards a healthier one now that we are at a place where we have a lot more stability in our lives.
