So I came across this thread and read the following discussion:

It's amazing that some men appear to genuinely believe that their wife and children would rather have them die than loose masculine status.

I'm sure this fits neatly into RP ideology as they often rave about how women are incapable of having empathy for men (not true overall in my experience, but I'm on the fence whether true in the average romantic relationship) and therefore deserves none of it in return (excusing emotional abuse).

I'd like to ask ExRP:

- How "extreme" (sorry for my dumb choice of word but I think you get my point) in general is this gender role for men? (in other words, how many women and daughters would rather see their father die than loose his status as a man in some way...)

- How common/widespread is it in western societies that men must repress themselves in this way in their families/relationship?

- What do you believe is the cause of it? Inherent biological wiring or society? A mix of both?
