No first hand experience in nursing other than when I was a med student/resident. General Nursing sucks. Too much interpersonal drama and having to deal with CNAs and always being understaffed or with lazy coworkers who don’t care about the patient or try to get you to do their work. Surgical OR/IR/Cath lab and ICU nursing is much better. Doctors respect the good ones. Very little drama. Travel nursing can be an ok source of income but you can’t really travel. I think most contracts are 6 weeks minimum.

CS you can work from anywhere but actually being able to take time off is hard. It was also soul crushing for me so I noped out into medicine. But for the time investment to hourly rate, very few professions have better ROI than being a code monkey. Plumber, electrician , or high end auto mechanic maybe.

Those are some lofty goals... but being able to travel AND reach independence by 40 may clash. I'm curious what others will advise as well.

If you're military get into trades!!

Electrical, Painting, Plastering, Roofing, Solar, Construction. Any of these will earn big bucks. Especially renovating. And you can travel - plan your own work - on the side if you are a contractor.

We can talk again in five years and everything related to trades will be mooning. Millenials and Z can hardly raise a hammer.

Doing what society actually needs will always fetch a decent to top price.

From this year on, trades contractor rates will double every year. Mark my words Coding is good too, but will only double once every four years.

Look to the future! I see retired plumbers and too many millenial developers.

Travel nursing sounds good to me. We have a huge and wealthy aging population right now. You only have to beat the standards of mostly lazy women to stay employed. It's pretty easy competition. A CS job, you can't fake your way through it and you need to be sharp. Plus, most tech type companies currently desire to be woke and want to hire women and the right kind of minorities for CS jobs....you may not fit the bill.

I was about to reply with a "not sure" kind of answer since, as a coder myself, I still don't have much experience job hunting since I've stayed with the same startup since I stopped being janitor (stepped up lol).

But then I saw that you have 1.5 years left. That changes the game because you can learn to code - and I mean really well - by building stuff in your spare time as you go. Then, by the time you're making your decision, you will

(A) know if you're good at it and want to continue, and
(B) be able to spend your time in school/training to do what I wish I did, which is focus on networking/internships/getting jobs. That stuff is more impactful than the learning itself, especially since coding requires you self-teach so many technologies on the job anyway.

As for language recommendations if you were to learn to code on your own - a pair of one frontend and one backend language would be a nice sample. Javascript and Go, for example. Python can be a good starter as well.

I learned to code by chance in high school, because I wanted to make flash games as a hobby, but it ended up becoming a career after I got my unrelated degree in Physics. The tool I used to start out was a free Python course on Coursera - possibly this one.

if you are intelligent go for STEM ... I have a M.Sc. in Computer Science ... it makes me way over 6 figures and I'm drowning in opportunities (at least 10 job offering per week on linkedin) ... if studying in your country costs money ... go to Europe ... I live in Germany and work in Switzerland ... my CS degree here was free of charge ... the universities also aren't flooded by SJW idiots (just a little bit) ... on STEM universities there's practically no SJW bullshit

Travel nursing will allow you to go to different locations in your camper and you will always have work. There is an article about a couple who both do that and they essentially are living your dream. Downside is the work might be in a location you don't want to be. Might not pay as well as the CS job but it can be harder to find a work remote one for those, not impossible though.

What do you mean by financial independence though? Retiring early or not having debt? 40 is a bit on the early side unless you're making some serious cash or you have little to no expenses to worry about. Chances are you're not going to want to live on the road forever

Get some degree via your GI bills. Like in economics,law,psychology.

Nowadays there is a big push for data science degree.

Everything is getting automated by robots so get an associate's degree in electronics. Then you can truly work anywhere.

Disclaimer: I don't have what I am suggesting, but I know guys who do and they are doing quite well. Also, if I was in your position I would do that.

CS is still predominantly male. I'd recommend a cyber security degree.

Just started travel nursing myself. That's a ways off as most travel agencies want you to have 2 years experience. I did a year of ICU, and a year and a half of dialysis. Now traveling on a general floor, and the other dude is absolutely right, it's fucking garbage, but for 10k a month, 40% non taxable, I can deal. I don't engage in the politics, just do my shit, take care of my people, and gtfo.

I'm a Senior Software Developer.
I'm 100% fully remote.
I'm 100% self taught.
I get job offers from companies on a weekly basis (sometimes daily).

Therefore, I would highly recommend going into coding.

Nursing would be the sure bet. There are health staffing companies that will place you in temporary nursing positions across the country.%20-%20Broad%20-%20Desktop&utm_term=travel%20nursing&utm_content=Travel%20Nursing) Also, most hospitals will allow you to park and live in their parking lots, especially in the more remote areas your adventure travels will take you.

Companies looking for remote CS workers can get better cheaper deals overseas. Nursing can't be outsourced over the internet to a third world country to save money.

There is a big demand for male nurses because the population is getting older and heavier.... not trying to be sarcastic- it is true.

It will require more than 2 years to get the RN degree, but it will be worth it.

I am not involved with nursing, but am involved in the tech side of the health care industry and talk to a lot of people.

Be prepared to work your ass off regardless of what you choose. Not going to be easy.

Look into Salesforce if you're IT minded and looking to code. I've made a great career as a dev on the platform
