I don't know about cheating statistics but the reason why a woman cheating is seen as worse boils down to this basic evolutionary fact:

Women always know the child is theirs. Men don't.

Ok, these are generalizations, but they are usually true:

when men cheat, it is usually just about having sex. The men still love their partners, and they aren't interested in having a long-term relationship with the woman that they had sex with.
when women cheat, they aren't just looking for sex. They are looking for much more. By the time they have cheated, they have already given up on their relationship with their partner. They are trying to start a new relationship with the man that they cheated with.

I can comment on this one because I am in a unique relationship.

I am in a semi open relationship where I am able to have FWB's and she doesn't want to fuck around.

So, in my experience me fucking other women has zero negative effects on how I feel about my wife.

I love her as much as ever, and telling the truth after I have been with one of my FWB's, I am more attracted to my wife because she is always the better option.

My wife is also extra affectionate after a FWB visit because she knows I have options but I always choose to stay with her.

When women sleep around it's a different story because the way female bonding works.

So yeah, it's a double standard, but that is because men and women are different.

2 reasons:

1.Skill. Like all sexual interactions, it takes skill for men to succeed because women have to be sure who they're fucking is of higher value than themselves. Men don't have such restraints on out sexuality because we don't run the risk of getting pregnant and being out of the game for months at a time. We could fuck 10 different women a day, every day if we had the time.

2.Because men have no way to ascertain the genetics of the baby until it actually comes and by then it's fucking late in the game.

Because a man typically has to give all his time and resources to a woman in order for her to fuck him, so if she's fucking someone else while he's giving her all his time and resources, it's a really bad deal for him.

Women typically don't support men, so when the man cheats he hasn't betrayed her financial contributions to him because she typically hasn't made any. In fact, if he's fucking other women while continuing to give her his resources she hasn't got a whole lot to complain about.

Multiple reasons, all logical:

1: Nothing on this planet stings like paternity fraud. Your woman cheats, she's opening herself up to a situation where you're gonna get fucked by this.

2: As Chris Rock says "It ain't no thing for a woman to turn down sex", she is effectively exchanging your hurt for far less. When a man (AFC) gets offered a cheating opportunity, he knows this might be his only chance for sex that actually has desire included for 12/24/36 months. He's weighing up the consequences (chance of cuckolding your wife with a kid thats not hers - None, chance of STD, little if condom used, chance of hurting her - High if you're stupid) and deciding that its worth the risk. She's doing the same, but deciding that your hurt is a tiny factor because the sex she is exchanging it for is far less scarce.

I guess another way of putting it is this - If your wife sells your classic Les Paul guitar for £1 because she doesnt like it, or your passion for music, you'll be explosively angry. If she sells it for £10,000 because she needs that money to cover something that is scarce/important/whatever, you'll understand a little more.

3: Society treats women who cheat as victims of inadequate husbands, it treats men who cheat as "Scum who couldnt keep their dick in their pants".

4: Traditional courtship is about men proving their worth to validate their exclusive access to her genitals. Not about her proving her worth for exclusive access to his. As a result he in theory has far more invested in the contract of exclusivity than she does, she makes no investment beyond turning up and letting him show her his wares. When its invalidated by her, he becomes redundant and all the investment he has made in her is null. When its invalidated by him she just switches provider because she has lost nothing.

Cheating is an awful thing to do no matter which sex does it. I think a scenario that is especially awful is one where a woman gets pregnant and doesn't know if her husband/bf is the dad, but she lets him believe he is.

There is some evidence of group sex type situations in humanity's past. Imagine the whole tribe fucking each other.

I know there's a lot of supposition among researchers that monogamy develops at the same time as agriculture. There are some modern farming tribes, however, where monogamy doesn't seem to be the norm.

Another thing, the connection between sex and babies isn't completely obvious. There are tribes, even today, that don't make that connection.

According to the Bible, you are not to covet your neighbor's wife in the same way you are not to covet other possessions. So women are considered property, just like children are practically property today.

My guess is that agriculture somehow made women into property. I'm sure there are a million reasons for this. Therefore, you wouldn't want to let her fuck someone without some sort of compensation, right? If she gives it away, it's like theft. That she'd have someone else's kids only makes it worse.

As for men, we own shit, we can do whatever we want.

The modern notion of male fidelity? I'm not sure where that concept comes from. I'm not sure if I've ever read anything about it. I'm guessing it comes from US Puritanical values. In Europe today, it's fairly accepted to have mistresses. But even in the US, there's a long history of rich men behaving badly and not getting divorced.

Because if a man cheats it's not out of disrespect for the women. He can still sexually desire her and go back to stay with her. Evolution equipped us this way so that the alpha's of the tribe could have sex with all the females without issue. If a women cheats, she has already lost respect for you and doesn't desire her former man. I say former because she must first abandon her attachment to the first guy to move on to the second, their hormones work that way. Women only sleep with guys they perceive to be above the guy they are currently with. Once they do that they are ruined because they will ALWAYS be mentally comparing you to her glorious three-hole experience with the dark triad alpha.

So a man cheating = relationship still intact. Women cheating = relationship gone, she's now using him for provider status and will cheat again in the near future.

I might get downvoted for being inquisitive but I suppose I've seen conflicting theories in TRP regarding whether women or men cheat more. Some say all women are bound to cheat, its just a matter of time, while so many maintain that its a mans biological imperative to spread his seed to as many young fertile women as possible, even if he is in a monogamus relationship.

So is there just a mutually exclusive set of ideas here? I'm not pointing fingers by any means, just a bit unclear on what I've picked up.

If a man cheats he just shoots some sperm at hoe and that's that. His ability to provide monetarily for his children isnt endangered unless he gets someone pregnant. If a woman cheats, she is spending less time with her offspring and more time with Romeo. Women are usually the predominant care giver so their time is more important to the child.
