I’m currently 21 y/o and am living in a College town attending school. I’ve stopped talking to my mom for about six months now and she’s reached out trying to re-form our relationship.

Background: My parents got divorced when I was approx. 12. Both parents remarried in roughly the last year. My mom moved out of the U.S. to The U.K. With her new husband (who is a total pushover, but he “adores” her) around the same time I stopped talking to her.

When I was growing up my mom raised me mainly... which explained why I was such a white-knight type of guy. As I grew and learned, I’ve been working through a lot of frustration and anger. I used to confide in my mom about everything and take her advice at face value assuming she knew best. She takes this as how our relationship “should” work.

Now that I understand female (and male) nature... I’m not willing to partake in the faux-relationships just so that everything looks right. She said she wants, “reciprocal and unconditional love from her son”

I don’t want to be her goddamn emotional cushion or emotional rock like her significant other should be. Anyone dealt with this before?

TLDR: Do I engage with an overly needy mother when I’m still trying to grow as a man?
