Commit to making it happen. That's all I did. Look for opportunities, massively decrease your lifestyle (since you're not chasing pussy), decrease your expenses and liabilities. Stabilize. Invest in assets only.

I like to referee sports specifically football and basketball. I make decent money and get to be apart of the sports that I grew up with.

I simplified my life to no pet, no car, no mortage, and a mostly vegetarian diet - to make things cheap. With no debt I have only three recurring expenses: a transit pass, mobile phone service, and rent. That immediately meant I could save 1/2 of what I made without breaking a sweat.

Then I switched to contracting work. So while I am in a corporation, I am not of it. I can leave at any time. I can look for contract jobs anywhere my agency places people. And with no attachments - outside of personal relationships - I am free to go whenever and wherever my fancy strikes me.

I replaced romantic relationships with friendships, books, computer games, and outdoor hobbies. Those are infinitely less cheaper than dating.

Try contracting work if your career or profession makes than an option.

I'm perhaps more extreme of the posters so far, but I had saved for a decade while being single, then quit my job and backpacked/hitchhiked around the world for a year. Now I'm making an old school bus to a tiny home to do contract work and travel around N and S America for the next decade or so.

Trades. Welder/Electrician/Plumber etc. Had I do it all over again, that's what I'd go into.

Mobile home on a rented lot is one of the cheapest ways to live, or buy a cheap lot and stick it there. Minimalist... Dont buy more crap than you need and buy stuff that is portable so you can take it with you...I got rid of my dresser and use hangers and shelves in the closet....get a smaller TV, memory foam mattress with foldable frame, etc.

It's not for everyone, but joining the military (or any public service for that matter) changes your perspective on life completely. You gain a new level of discipline, and an appreciation for community service in all forms. Makes you feel part of something larger than yourself. I'm not saying people who don't serve are selfish, but committing to something larger than yourself for the good of others changes you. Usually for the better!

Creating things such as art, writing etc.

There are whole host of things you can do to ditch working in a cubicle.
I recommend looking into digital nomad idea / subculture, I've been part of it as a means to socialize abroad and I found there to be freelancing marketers, programmers, entrepreneurs, creative people etc.

My original push to leave a steady job was after reading Four Hour Workweek about a 10 year ago...
Ever since I saw the light in the end of a tunnel and had a desire to become independent.
I manage to free myself from jobs about 5 years ago as I quit my job and went traveling for a while and then discovered cryptocurrencies. To this day I live by buying low and selling high. This does not have to be crypto's per se (and I can't say I recommend trading as it is really difficult) as it can be anything you could buy cheap and sell higher which can be thought of as trading...

Upcycling old stuff could also be a good side hustle.
For example if you are a handy man, you could pick up some old furniture, pieces of tech in your interests etc. repair it and with skills of creating good copy for sell post make good money in between

It really depends on what your interests and experiences are and it is also important to understand that it won't happen overnight... There are PLENTY of things however you can do.

In preparation, like some others I recommend you cut your expenses and get lean with it, sell excess shit you don't need and gather some "fuck you money" i.e. capital to leave your job and stay jobless for at least 6 months or just money to invest into whatever you can turn into something you can sell later

Surprised how few upvotes it has. I would be ok even with a stickied post. Sure, there are a few subs dealing with that, but I tink it is a no-brainer that we here still have a different mindset that could influence the direction the discussions takes.

It's a long term planned strategy:

you work at the plantation
while you live as frugally as you can, low overhead, no consumer debt
in the meanwhile you plan your exodus by starting your own little company, I am not talking about freelancing or any (professional) service company, I am talking about something that you can make money while you're sleeping.
once the business starts to take over, you leave the plantation and never look back

there might be periods where you might have to have a part-time job on top of the full-time job to save money, and there might be periods where you have to freelance while ramping up your company.
