First weekend alone.

Hang in there. About 2 months before the end end, my then wife took the kids and dog on vacation with her parents. Against my wishes, it was a big fuck you and a power move. I had to work, I couldn’t get time off, we couldn’t afford it. She didn’t care and wanted to prove a point. Fine. First night was Friday night. I was fine. I played Xbox, watched tv, rubbed one out and went to sleep. Saturday was hard. I woke up in an empty bed, in a quiet house, and I had all the time and freedoms to do whatever I wanted, but I was hung up on being alone. I had a huge knot in my throat and my head was swimming with negativity and poor me thinking.

But.... something happened Saturday night. I was having a beer, watching tv and was just looking around. Taking inventory of the house and really looking at everything. I realized I was afraid of losing THINGS more than I was afraid of losing her. I knew I was a good dad and nothing could change that. But the idea of starting over scared the hell out of me. I’m going to have to get a couch, a tv dishes, bed, bedding. And then with the list in my mind I went down the list and figured out what I had to do. Push come to shove, we’re men. We’re savages if need be. I’ll shop at good will, Craigslist, Facebook... and get the essentials and build off that.

My point is this... she left and wanted to prove a point. What she actually did was give me time to think. Time to scheme. Time to prepare myself for the fight.

This is when quitters quit. You got this

This is the worst part. Worse than you missing her. Worse than whatever is going on.

Focus on your projects. It keeps your mind from wandering and keeps your hands busy and away from vice and shallow bandages. And spend the time working on yourself, with a promise of always being there for the kids when they get back.

One thing that helped me, was doing projects that were for my daughter (kids in your case). Since they were on my mind it helped. Then began hitting the gym after a few weeks. It’s weird to kinda force yourself to think about yourself again but it’s definitely a must. You need to rebuild your identity, your now a single father and it’s much different. Make goals of how you want your life to be and work towards that.
