Nothing wrong with letting them you know that you appreciate them. Think I would refrain from providing too much of an explanation. You have zero control over what your STBX might say to them and my experience has been that blood is thicker than water.

I’m in this situation exactly, with addition of estrangement from daughter ( her choice not mine). If they’re good people they should find a way to stay friends/family.

Blood is thicker than water - I was dropped like a lump of shit by ex’s side except by ex’s brother- I took on the job of peacemaker of the family and soothed over all the family bickering and as soon as my ex left me the contact was cut and the past meant nothing- I suppose I am just saying be prepared to loss ex’s family- it’s natural they will rally around her and not you.

I think that is a very kind thought but initially much better suited to an email/text versus a face to face. Based on their response, you can have a face to face.
