I think it's obvious that women get the better side of the deal in traditional (and even contemporary) marriages.

Ironically the feminist movement that highlights unpaid (but not paid) labor helps to reinforce those gender norms, not fight against them. Even if they do legitimately care about ending them.

I think we need to be honest and talk about how men have been, and still are, exploited for money so that women can live easier lives. Often at home without working.

I wouldn't say it's the government that wants both parents working. It is business. The higher the supply of workers, the lower the price of work.

I'm going to pick on this sentence:

Two points:

1) No. The vast majority of childcare providers do NOT do the essential task of "parenting" (unless they have their own kids).

Parenting is 24/7 with no days off. Very little of it happens during childcare hours, except for what the parents do at work or take time off to do.

If you want credit for "parenting", show up at 2 AM for a feeding, or just to walk the kid around to get them back to sleep. Do all the laundry, and dishes and cleaning and bathing and prepare three meals a day (including lunch to send with). Put money in the college account. Pay child support after a divorce. Run home from your actual job for emergencies. Watch the kids when they are sick. Take them to the doctor, provide insurance and organize medical records. Organize and administrate all other vital record-keeping. Be or provide all accounting and legal services for 18 years and likely longer. Take them to family events (x2 families), church, and all extracurricular activities for which you will pay. Teach them to ride a bike and drive and become productive members of society.

Be ultimately accountable for everything in their lives.

Childcare providers often just do the "stay-at-home" part of being a SAHP.

2) I made that first point so I can make this second one- childcare-as-a-service, what day cares and babysitters actually provide- was not historically a necessity. In fact, it is a modern invention.

Prior to the early twentieth century most people were farmers or worked out of their home. They didn't need someone to "watch" the kids while they were at work because they didn't go anywhere to do it. They watched the kids while they worked and once the kids were old enough they helped out with the work.

If you did go somewhere to work, back then, you mostly just brought your kid along. This was normal.

The need for childcare is derived from compliance with modern "child labor", "home alone", "compulsory education" and other unfunded mandates. Not from the actual reality of what children need or even want from their parents.

I'm a stay at home mom because we don't want anyone else raising our kids.. It's all I have ever wanted to do and not because I'm lazy. If women would focus on their strengths instead of trying to emulate men a lot of kids would be much better off. Daycare and public schools are trash if no one has noticed lately.

The 40/40/40 (40 hours, 40 weeks, 40 years) career is a conspiracy between corporations, the union mafia, and the government.

Prior to the Great Depression, FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) was the norm. Men worked hard every day for a short handful of years (5 or so), and retired to their own family homestead.

Industrialists hated that, because they had to replace men all the time, so they came up with a strategy where they'd work men for fewer hours and hire more of them.

The government was all too happy to help. Inflation, the 30-year mortgage, overtime hours legislation, and the progressive income tax, all actively discourage people racking up hours.

House with two salary -> two salaries worth of taxes.

The reason why governements are pushing for female education isn't because they care about women, it's because they know that unneducated women are more likely to stay at home while unneducated men will still produce a (smaller) salary.

It is purely a capitalist goal.

I found a loophole! Be born with or become disabled and then the government pays you to stay home... granted it would be better to work... if I could. My wife works. But we don't have any kids either... since ya know, I have health issues and bringing a child into that world doesn't seem like a good idea when I can barely survive myself. But yeah the government gets nothing! Wait... I paid into social security when I did work for decades... ok I'm lost now... what was the question? Where am I? What year is it?

The media perpetuates that home parenting is demeaning and somehow less important then working outside the home. So we have people that are not career driven, going for a full career even if they don't need the money, simply because it appears fun and glamorous. When keeping a good home and raising a child is far more important for those who want a family. (Which to be honest is mostly women. Not to say men are opposed to having a family.)
