A long time ago I had a brief job working for a buffet at casino as a busser. After training, I rapidly became the second best busser there. The best one was a really great guy, hard worker, kindhearted, the whole shebang. But then a few months after I started, he and his girlfriend had a baby. She got maternity leave from her job, he got no paternity leave from his. He started being late to the buffet due to helping with the baby--never more than five minutes, mind you, and the rest of us would joke that he had to change a diaper. But then one day he didn't show and when I asked the boss where he was, she told me that he had been fired because of his lateness. And so I became the best busser at this buffet, not by merit of surpassing the competition, but by default of having the competition get fired. And without him around, the place really suffered. It didn't help that the boss was new, had just recently taken over from the old boss, and was a power hungry tyrant who screamed herself hoarse at people over the smallest mistakes. Meanwhile, we had another busser come back from 6 months of maternity leave, then quit after a few days. Anyway, that's my story of witnessing workplace discrimination.

There’s no such thing as a wage gap, and it’s been proven time and time again. There’s the earnings gap...which FDS claims is the “wage” gap. Comes from simple facts like men being more likely to work more hours, more overtime, hazard pay, taking jobs with more hours in general. Women tend to take more time off, work less hours, rarely work OT etc.
