So I got a notification that I was banned from r/PornIsMisogyny, (I never commented there) which is a subreddit I just recently learned exists. In case you haven't heard of it, it's basically a subreddit that is so rabidly anti-porn that ISIS would be impressed, and they consider it a best practice to make sure at least 80% of the posts there contain some amount of sexism against men in the comments (and they get all riled up if you point it out). There, you'll learn that, 1. The porn industry writ large is the exact same thing as a massive sex-trafficking ring, 2. all porn is misogyny, including gay porn, and 3. porn CANNOT be misandry. Fun stuff. They also, unsurprisingly, share a large portion of their users with FDS, and are openly supportive of that sub. FYI, I'm not pro-porn, I just think their sub is a little batshit.

Anyway, one of the users there recently created the 153rd feminist subreddit, and was trying to recruit new users. Someone in the comments speculated that the new sub would probably be banned soon, and remarked that, after all, "reddit hates women".

Now hold up. I've seen that phrase before, and it's not anymore true now then it was in the past. It seems that this user is referring to a few radical feminist subreddits, the worst of the worst, worse than FDS if you can imagine that, which were banned or quarantined.

The problem is that I'm preeeeetty sure those subreddits were banned for transphobia, not for misandry. I say this because r/AgainstHateSubreddits, which is vehemently anti-transphobia but doesn't give a shit about misandry, may have had something do with it. To have your sub banned for misandry on Reddit, the majority of your sub's users and mods would have to be openly plotting a terrorist attack against a Boy Scouts den or something like that, and only then it would be banned because it's a legal liability, not because it's wrong. This is important to mention because the implication behind "Reddit hates women" is that Reddit has a male bias, which is patently incorrect. Hell there's a damn default sub named after women's sex chromosomes, and that's a sub so toxic you can be banned permanently just for saying, "men aren't only people who do that, women do that, too", which is how I got banned. There are no default subs made specifically for men.

Now are there subs that contain a fair amount of misogyny? Sure. Are there openly misogynist redditors? Hell, there are quite a few in this sub. However, the idea that "Reddit hates women" is not supported by the preponderance of evidence, whether you're referring to the admins or the majority of the user base. Being seriously misogynist on most subreddits will tax your karma and can often get you banned from them. If you use this phrase unironically, it's probably because you are a self-obsessed victim and/or live in an echo chamber.
