I don’t know if this is the right place for this. I just stumbled across this group. But an idea that has always bothered me, albeit an unimportant one—perhaps because it is so unimportant, is when women fought for the social acceptance to wear pants. This happened many decades ago of course. Where’s my social right as a completely heterosexual, straight, average man to wear a nice breezy sundress in the summer or a formal business skirt to the office? I think it belies the whole notion of “equal rights” as being each side getting to do what they want to do. Women at the time did not advocate for “anyone to wear what they chose.” Women advocated for themselves so they wouldn’t be doomed to wear constrictive victorian era dresses anymore. To be clear, I’m not a man feeling so oppressed and put down by women. I’m not hating on anything. I don’t actually want to wear a dress myself. I’m only pointing out the incongruency. Women don’t advocate for “equality in the workplace.” They advocate for themselves, and other minority groups, to get what they want. True equal rights would sound like eliminating 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘺𝘱𝘦𝘴, making me feel comfortable to be a women’s hairstylist, or a nanny, or any such occupation normally reserved for women or non-masculine men. Equality in the workplace has meant getting what each party finds most desirable—directors, producers, CEOs, positions of authority, power and greater pay. Conversely, I don’t see women lining up to pour concrete, shingle roofs, mine coal, or operate heavy machinery. Is equality in the workplace getting what you want? Or an equal share? I don’t know, I’m asking the group here. Maybe that’s communism or something lol. Anyway, those are some thoughts I’ve had for a long time and I would appreciate any honest, helpful, constructive feedback.
