Because men deserve it, so they're only statistics. Not even a named gender. No allusion to being a father, or a provider, or anything. Just 44 nameless, roleless civilians.

It tells you who the speaker doesn't care about, or is protecting. Bias like this is common if you look for it:

a politician who breaks the law only has their party named if it's Republican
a policeman killing a civilian is only covered if it's a white shooting a black (edit: and the black is sanctified regardless of how warranted the shooting was)
a drug crisis only comes up if it reflects badly on whites (opioids)

and so on. The bias and bigotry is stunning.
