If I'm understanding this correctly, this is an expansion of the Violence Against Women Act. Which allows for federal prosecutors to consider 'boyfriends' partners when limiting their rights because of past convictions against them. Specifically in regards to domestic violence, and specifically in regards to gun-ownership. With the verbiage of the Act calling 'domestic violence' something as minor as 'offensive touching'. Which I assume is up to a judge to define.

Reading for worse case scenario, someone that you went on one date with that was offended you touched their back, could prevent you from ever owning a gun. It seems mostly to deal with legally owning a firearm. And mostly by expanding the definition of 'domestic partner' to be anyone you've dated or had sexual relations with.

You could already do all of this in Washington with ex parte protection orders, I've never seen any indication that other states limited these orders as all of these courts receive grant monies from VAWA for doing so. I don't have 1A or 2A rights because of this.

So it seems america and canada are going to destroy the right to own guns using methods claiming to increase safety for women. Rip gun rights. The west is so gynocentric that they will gladly destroy liberties and bring a totalitarian government (which is going to cause alot of harm to women as well) by abusing the west's overprotective tendencies towards women.

That's against the constutution it will never fly in the states "The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right to keep and bear arms. It was ratified on December 15, 1791, along with nine other articles of the Bill of Rights."

They don’t care. The words “shall not be infringed” exist, but we have backwards gun laws. If the barrel length on a rifle is shorter than an arbitrary number, 10 years in prison and $250,000 fine. Vertical fire grip on a pistol? Same thing. Angled fore grip? Perfectly fine.

The silver lining here is that its a rather new attempt to make changes but we have yet to see how or if these changes will take effect and how things turn out should they be passed.

Never mind that all a woman has to do to secure a protective order is nod a judge's way and she gets it.

This sounds bad, but the article has a clear bias, and while that doesn’t automatically make it wrong, it makes it hard to see with only the facts.

There's a "violence against women" act? Surely it's "violence against humans"?

[–]JestyerAverageJoe 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Are you new here or a troll?

[–]xdzgor 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Not sure why you'd think I was a troll. I was just surprised to hear there would be gendered violence laws in the US. Sounds like there is systemic sexism.

[–]JestyerAverageJoe 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why are you surprised?

[–]5thPhantom 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There is.

[–]Paliant 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s basically expected that the legal system caters to women in the USA. If you can’t tell being a US resident then you’re just blissfully ignorant to the degree that laws are “gendered”.
