Modern rom-coms assume a female audience and reflect the ambivalent attitude society has towards chivalry. You can see this at the start of the most recent wave with films like Sleepless in Seattle that deliberately hark back to old romance films. The message: women don't want that old-fashioned stuff, unless they do.

When it's done by the right kind of guy in the right kind of circumstance, it's romantic. Otherwise it's sexist or creepy.

This genre still has incredibly sexist double-standards too. In a recent film on Netflix, a woman slaps a guy who's being impertinent. In a later scene, he tells her he deserved it.

This is a really eye-opening observation when you think about it. I bet if you asked most women which sex was more romantic, they'd respond "women" without hesitation. But while they are the ones who tend to be obsessed with romance, their role to play is typically just to receive it. Is being obsessed with something the same as being good at it, or a frequent practitioner of it? Maybe that's why girls like to play hard to get and "shit test" -- it's a pathological way to make them feel like more of an active participant.

If you were to ask what romantic gestures women provide for men, it's probably just "I put on lacy underwear, a nice dress and my expensive makeup" for a date that he also got dressed up for, arranged transportation, maybe flowers, paid for food, maybe a movie, etc, etc. And of course he had to plan it all. There are exceptions, but I personally can't think of any I've experienced personally; I treasure my wife but in our 10 years, she has never done anything for me more romantic than getting dolled up (not that I care). Mention this to a feminist, and you will get something about "emotional labor" probably.

Romcoms are emotional pornography for women imo.

Same with movies/series about family, it is always the dad/husband who fucked up and have to win the woman back.
