Prisons are an ineffective form of punishment. An alternative should be found for those who are committing a crime. Do you agree with this?

Nothing wrong with prisons. Its what happens in them that is ineffective. If prisons were about teaching life skills and arranging rewarding work upon exit, they could dramatically reduce recidivism.

But since they are about maximizing profits and minimizing costs, it ends up being a revolving door or people incapable of dealing with life on the outside.

Biden will not be renewing any contracts with private prisons. This is a big first step. The people making money off of prisoners should not be in charge of making sure they are functional on the outside. Its in their best interest to have them leave prisons addicted to drugs and with no valuable skills. Because then they'll be back in no time.

As someone who has been locked up, I can honestly say that the way prisons are run in NY, make people much worse rather than improve them. I was a non violent offender as were many others but there is no difference when you're in there and there should be. I'm sure other places are different but in my experience here, you just get released angry, and bitter towards the world. Also having to restart your entire life over a simple mistake in some cases.

The fact that private prisons issue fines for not being kept full is a massive issue. The fact that we imprison people for non-violent crimes is also an issue.

Reducing our massive prison population by no longer looking to cage humans for non-violent and especially victimless "crimes" would do a lot to help. Rehabilitation should be the key. Reducing reoffending rates seems like an obvious goal for corrections.

The criminal justice system in the u.s is interested in keeeping the free forced prison labour and giving special treatment to women who get in trouble with the law, they are not fighting crime.

Improvement would always be good, but it is better to suggest concrete changes, rather than to just assert that system that other people have put immense thought into, over the course of generations, are just obviously wrong.

That's largely b/c most of the felons aren't going to change. They know they can get FREE food, clothing, and shelter on your money.

Of course, I think a system of rehabilitation would be much more effective. A brand new environment other than the one that's currently in place would be much better than our current system.

What I think needs to be changed is trying to get vengeance on people in prison by making their life hell. I view being locked up as generally punishment enough. I think prison life should be made to be as comfortable as reasonably possible. Prisoners that will behave themselves and not be violent should be kept in areas that are safe from violence and comfortable. Even prisoners who are violent I'd like to be kept safe from violence but I don't know how that can be accomplished so I don't have any great ideas for that.

Anything that can be reasonably implemented that make the prisoners life better I'm generally for. If they can work and make money go for it(although there may be times where victims get some of their earnings). If they want to learn to build stuff or be a mechanics or be a writer or gardener or cook or whatever I think is a good thing and should be encouraged. I'd like to see them have animals as pets or visitors to boost their spirits. I'm actually considering whether online cameras would be a good thing so that people could watch to make sure prisoners aren't being abused.

I'm not opposed to corporal punishment for crime commission. It'll work as a deterrent, and doesn't ruin your entire life.
