I find the concept of gaslighting fascinating. Because it is something that narcissists are accused of all the time. Yet, my experience working with narcissists is that they generally don't even realise they are gaslighting. For them their distorted version of events is the only "correct" one and it is other people who are gaslighting them when they don't agree precisely with the narcissist.

Gaslighting is less about getting someone to believe something that isn't true, and more about having an obsession with controlling other people because they can't manage their own feelings.

It is over used, as is narcissist. In some online communities, such as empath communities for example, listening to them, 99.8462% of the people they ever meet are narcissists.

Yeah, it's just one of the many words people have taken and exaggerated its uses for to make themselves feel more important with what is happening to them. It started with people exaggerating mental illnesses for mostly comic effect "I can't stand this, I have OCD" or "I can't focus I have ADD" and then slowly transitioned to every single person saying they are 'depressed' when they just mean "I have no real hobbies so am sad when I'm not hanging out with friends lately".

Throw in feminism and these exaggerations start being used for anything that they experience. It's no longer just a guy being annoying, its harassment, its no longer regret, its rape, it's no longer a man just being wrong for you he's 'toxic', and here we have two people not seeing eye to eye on an issue and it's 'gaslighting'.

Almost all words have been thrown around and diluted so much that they've lost their actual meaning. Words are violence, abuse, rape. I blame Buzzfeed-ish media houses, and one-sided laws.

I’m good with the term because it’s colorful and unique, and once you understand the definition it’s clear. But I’d accept another term that’s equally simple but more descriptive.

I dont hate it, but it is over used and misused, just like Nazi, Fascist, Racist, and other Buzzwords people like to throw around.
