Hi RPW. First-time poster, hoping to learn and improve myself.

Backstory

I'm 30 years old. I've been in a relationship for almost 4 years. For a long time, I bought into the idea that I needed to be independent, and even a little bit competitive with my SO. And then I got another batch of save-the-dates and realized that I'm not sending any out because nobody wants to settle down with a girl who's trying to be better than her man.

SO and I don't fight often, but when I bring up the future, he always stalls. Says he knows he wants marriage and a family, but he isn't sure when. His friends are all married and having kids. He's in a great place with his career. This makes me think he's just not sure about me.

Things are okay on the bedroom side (I feel like I'm taking care of his needs, but I'm also the one that initiates 90% of the time.), but I feel like they're totally flagging on the long-term commitment side.

The Problem

Every long-term relationship I've had has ended around the 3-4 year mark. Every ex has gone on to get married to the very next woman he dated, usually in less than a year. It makes me feel like something I did flipped that switch that let them know they wanted to settle down, but not with me.

I don't want this to happen again. I want to be better. I'm not sure how to flip that settle-down switch with me as the target.

My Faults/Steps I've Taken

I'm still learning about all of the things that I do that are problematic. I know that I have a tendency to want the last word, and I'm working on that. I'm working on being more supportive, listening better, being more nurturing. I'd like to work towards a situation that shows him that I'm a great companion and worthy of settling down.

Help? I've started reading RPW, which I think is a good move, but I'm not even sure that I'm looking at my own situation from the right angle.
