Ironically it's actually men's mental health that is dismissed, underresearched, and stigmatized more.

The mental health industry is tailored towards women and women's mental health. To the point that men are often treated with strategies that work better for women than for men.

Other times men are treated like defective women. Ie, you just need to cry more and then you won't be depressed.

That's not to say that mental health isn't stigmatized and that women have things easy. But the gendered aspects here tend to benefit women in comparison to men.

To answer your question, (I'm generalising a bit), it's just a way of seeking attention. There's also a vile side of the medical profession where anything and everything is a "mental condition" now. It's in human nature to help the disadvantaged, and different cultures do it in different ways. Now that you know what benefits it brings, and how to "manufacture" a disability, you have a goldmine. This is especially true for social media, where negative feedback is either removed by content policy or buried (how often have you heard "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything") and the positive feedback is exaggerated (you can buy likes), it's a perfect recipe for making money, fame and even a career out of evoking sympathy. I'm not saying only women do that, but the ones that are successful in it, are predominantly female.

It's the latest in the list of fads... Tattoos, diets, certain drugs, tiny chihuahuas, certain mental conditions (5 years ago, everyone announced they were introverts, had OCD, and what not), "novel parenting techniques"...

It boils down to faith, belief and dogma.

Evidence and proof are not required. Likewise, you will be unable to "prove" to a devout believer that their faith is based on lies.

Its a narrative, a story, a fabrication...a lie. Basically everything boils down to patriarchal values and invisible constraints and shit because...it can't be proven either way, once you get close to disproving it(as there is no proving it) the rhetoric gets more complex, more convoluted, its how ideas like 'internalized misogyny'(aka women hating themselves for being women) came about. Yet these ideas are just...crap, as with internalized misogyny there is one very real indicator of self hatred, suicide. Women do not kill themselves that much, men do, so if women who are complicit with the patriarchy and hate themselves so much, why don't they die more from stress? Take their own lives because they hate themselves? Because its not true.

I'm sure there are some women who do, but not for the reasons that are touted.

Misogyny and all that are the boogeyman, and it sounds good to the masses of people, as most people don't like hating people for no reason, so on the surface level, people say 'misogyny is bad' and thus support all the malarkey feminists do and don't tell people.

I don't agree with the extremity of her replies. However, can I ask why you feel this issue is specific to women? At least, that's what you're implying by asking this question. I know many women AND men who seemingly make up mental health conditions for attention. Why could this question not have been 'Why do people make up mental health issues?' - you would have gotten a much better response. I get the feeling that you knew women would respond like this to your question due to the way it was worded. Even if your intention wasn't so, it comes across like a direct attack to women.
