Here we have a conundrum. On one hand, we have an individual who celebrated her victory on Twitter. Whether she was doing a bit, hyping it up, or just play-bragging, she was still bragging. Someone told her to mind her language and she responds with the same energy. She acted with nothing but pride, disrespect, and profanity.
On the other hand, we have a crusty old boomer who is out of touch with millennials and doesn’t understand the humor or satire in play-bragging because all he sees is bragging from an anthropomorphic profile picture on social media.
She acted unprofessionally, but she wasn’t being serious either. I mean, honestly, what woman unironically says “suck my dick and balls?” It’s obviously a joke. She lost her scholarship/internship and missed out on a golden opportunity and for what? A contextually obvious joke-brag on Twitter?
Plus, the boomer doesn’t really have a hill to die on either. Simply replying with “Language.” Seriously? If we’re going to be ‘professional’ in order to represent NASA, then complete sentences should be a start. I doubt NASA lacks the eloquence. I’m pretty sure NASA is above the kindergarten level pestering of “Language.”
Some of you might think I’m being a white knight or a top tier simp right now, but no. This is a problem in schools as well. A high school student was punished for holding a sign that said “Bong Hits 4 Jesus,” but a protestor has the constitutional right to burn an American flag. See the problem with this picture? I guess jokes, fun, cursing, and being human in your spare time is illegal when you work for the government.
The 1st Amendment is not a pussy pass. The only speech that is not protected is speech that incites violence and illegal activity (e.g. fighting words.) I highly doubt that “Shut the fuck up I got a NASA internship!!!” and “suck my dick and balls” in this context counts. What was she SUPPOSED to say?
“Silence, for a moment, my online friends, for I have an important announcement to make. I have just received an internship from NASA. This is very exciting for me and I am proud to be here. Carry on.”
All I see here is a NASA employee with skin that is thinner than the paper that he writes on! Dickless the Clown! To all of the professors who mark off points from students who express their opinions in their papers, you are the reason why democracy is as good as dead! To all of the bosses who use edgy memes and rambunctious Tweets of your employees to denounce or fire them, the same goes for you! To the news outlets who constantly misrepresent people’s words, the same goes for you!
