That's a wrong definition. A nerd is a study geek and generally these type of people become more successful. So if they are saying they are generally men, then they are right. You have to be a nerd if you want extremely successfull position.

so funny story, back in the day... like 80's when computers were first taking off. Society, like everyone, made fun of people that were getting into them. We made of kids (usually almost always young boys which is why the definition is gendered). They were often the target of bullying, ridicule and scorn.

(We sort of knew the prevalence of autism but nobody gave a single shit. Still largely dont)

Then we realized that women werent interested in STEM and that was all quietly forgotten. (this would be in the 90's when we upturned the whole institution of education because while girls were doingbetter than boys they werent absolutely stomping them like they are now) Instead the very people we had bullied their whole lives were found to be the culprits by creating a "hostile environment" that was keeping girls out. It wasnt the decades of making fun of anyone that showed interest in anything STEM related by the majority, not at all. It was the damn nerds again.

Now those guys that were in the tail end are working in an industry where they know a woman has a 2:1 advantage over them for promotion just by being part of the historical group that ostracized them.

And they get to work in the most "woke" companies that probably have morning lectures about how historically oppressed women were so they should be good allies by bowing out quietly.

Fun times.

A dictionary definition reflects how a word is used and nothing more. The word nerd is used to describe men far more often than it's used to describe women, so the definition is correct.

I wish this sub would limit post to things that actually matter. No one cares that a dictionary definition of nerd applies to only men. If you’re offended by THIS, I’d hate to see you enter the real world. I hope this is not the same crowd that tell people they’re “snowflakes” and “triggered” and makes fun of safe spaces at college. If you are, then you’re a hypocrite.
