We have some disappointing news to share, but it comes with a positive action plan, so please read to the end to hear how you can support our efforts.

This September, the Canadian Centre for Men and Families participated for the fourth year in the two-day Cabbagetown Street Festival. Through this annual event, which takes place in the heart of the community where we operate in Toronto, we have introduce our services to dozens of men who would otherwise be suffering in silence.

At the end of the first day of the Festival, our volunteers were approached by Festival staff and instructed not to return the following day. The staff refused to give any information or provide any means of appeal.

A subsequent investigation brought to light the following. A young lady had approached our volunteers that afternoon, took their photos, then launched into an aggressive tirade of profanities. She later took to twitter to share her photos, where she described our volunteers as "pieces of shit" and "asshats." These abusive tweets received an immediate response of support from Festival staff, who within one hour had us removed from the event.

In the weeks ahead, that same individual would begin to stalk one of our volunteers, who happens to live in the community, following him in order to scream threatening insults in the middle of the street.

Cabbagetown Festival staff, who would later claim their actions were necessary to protect the public, have taken no interest in the actual victimization of our volunteers through incidents serious enough for Toronto Police to begin the process of issuing a restraining order against this abuser.

Although Festival staff originally promised a full refund, after nearly three months no such refund has been provided and our emails have gone unanswered. Outrageously, a visit to the Cabbagetown Festival offices today confirms that their Board is now debating whether to follow through on their promised refund!

Those of you who have followed our growth know that we are no stranger to opposition, whether based on hateful misandry or on a "zero-sum game" mentality that sees services for men and boys as in conflict with those for other groups. You also know that we pride ourselves on always taking the high ground and turning setbacks into opportunities for positive engagement.

We intend to do the same here. In response to this development, we must show the community why an agency for men and boys is absolutely critical. The best way to do this is by bringing our recently released suicide prevention billboard ads to locations all across our Cabbagetown community - and beyond!
